Bay Course Closure

Kapalua Golf has made the painful but necessary decision to close the Bay Course indefinitely and concentrate all available water on the Plantation Course.

While Maui receives some of the highest rainfall in the nation, poor infrastructure, limited storage, and lack of reuse leave communities facing avoidable shortages. It's problematic that more than 70% of water distribution on Maui is controlled by private entities. True resiliency comes from managing our abundant water resources wisely: capturing rain, maintaining delivery systems, and investing in storage for dry periods. The outcome we face today was preventable. This crisis is not the result of drought alone, but of years of inadequate maintenance of the Honokōhau Ditch system by its owner, Maui Land & Pineapple (MLP). MLP has deepened the crisis by refusing to collaborate on solutions, rejecting TY Management’s repeated offers to finance and support critical repairs and improvements. The result is recurring water cutoffs, unhealthy turf, and now the painful loss of a beloved course.

Allowing the Bay Course to go out of play was the only responsible option left. Splitting limited water between two courses would have guaranteed the collapse of both. By directing all available resources to the Plantation Course, we are giving Maui its best chance to retain the PGA TOUR’s season-opening event, which generates nearly $50 million in annual economic impact, supports hundreds of jobs, and contributes to local nonprofits.

We recognize this decision is painful for residents and visitors who enjoyed the course and for our ʻohana who cared for the Bay Course with pride. But the responsibility for this loss lies with MLP’s failure to steward the water infrastructure it owns and monopolizes. TY remains committed to pushing for transparent, accountable management of West Maui’s water so that residents, farmers, and businesses can rely on the resources they need.

Kapalua Golf Closes For 60 Days

Aloha Kapalua Golf ʻOhana,

We want to share an important update with our valued guests and community. Beginning September 2, 2025, The Plantation Course and The Bay Course will be closed for 60 days as we work to restore turf health after prolonged irrigation restrictions.

This decision was not made lightly. While water restrictions have recently been downgraded to Tier 2, the prolonged period under Tier 4 – zero irrigation – caused significant stress and damage to the courses. Closing at this time will allow us to begin careful recovery and restoration so the courses may once again meet the standards of safety and playability our guests deserve. Under the current Tier 2 restrictions, which allows for 60% irrigation, our team is making every effort to restore golf course conditions to the highest level to host The Sentry PGA Tournament in January 2026.

For guests with tee times on September 2 or later, all prepaid reservations made through our online booking system will be fully refunded. Please allow 7–14 business days for processing. While we cannot share a reopening date just yet, we will continue to provide updates on our website as soon as more information becomes available.

While the golf courses rest, much of Kapalua Resort remains open to welcome you. The Tennis & Pickleball facilities, the Bay Course driving range, Plantation and Bay golf shops, Taverna, and the Plantation House Restaurant will all remain OPEN.

We are so grateful for your patience, understanding, and aloha as we navigate this challenging time together. We are deeply grateful for your continued support, and we look forward to welcoming you back to the courses as soon as conditions allow.

With gratitude,
Alex Nakajima
